When I was pregnant with Madilyn I ended up being induced because I was developing preeclampsia. It was only 9 days before her due date and I was not dilated or effaced at all yet. This time around I was a little surprised when at my 36 week appointment I was already 1.5cm and 50%. By my 37 week appointment I was 2cm and 70%. I was having contractions every day, just not in any patterns. My doctor gave me the option of bring induced once I made it to 39 weeks. I decided to go for it! After being induced with Madilyn I thought it was nice to already be at the hospital when things start to happen and not have all the guess work of if it was time to go in or not. We got on the induction schedule for the 15th of January. I was excited to deliver in the same hospital that I was born in!
We were very excited and Lucas's mom and sister flew in the day before. On the way to the airport to pick them up we got a call from the hospital that our insurance would not cover at that hospital. They said I was more than welcome to still deliver there, I would just have to pay the hospital portion out of pocket. This would only cost about $12,000.00!!!! I started panicking! I was supposed to have my baby the next day, but now I could not deliver where I had set up to deliver.
Lucas called our doctor and explained what was going on. Our doctor is awesome and pulled some strings so we could be on the induction schedule the next morning at a hospital that our insurance covers. Lucas and I started making jokes.... if we got shot and were in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, would we have to tell them not to go to the close hospital, but continue another 10 min up the road to the hospital that takes our insurance? Seriously, huge flaw in our healthcare system!
We were scheduled for 7am, but told to call just incase they got flooded overnight with women in labor and were full. We got up at 5:30 and got ready. I called and they were full!! Now it was a waiting game. We finally got the call that they were ready for us to come in at 11:15!
We got to checked in and put in our room. By the time I got my IV and began the Pitocin, it was about 12:30. Things started progressing and contractions were really kicking in. The nurse kept telling me I could get an epidural whenever I wanted, but I insisted on waiting until the contractions got strong so I would at least experience some of it. When I was in a lot of pain, I asked for the epidural. It took really fast and I soon had two dead legs! Even though my contractions were going strong, I seemed to get stuck at 4cm. At about 6:30 my doctor came in and broke my water, with hopes that it would get things progressing again. About 30-45 min later I was at 5cm. Yay! I was progressing again! I still had 5 cm to go, which should take awhile still.....or so I thought.....
My nurse was monitoring me closely because with every contraction the baby's heart rate would decelerate. This happened with Madilyn, too, and they inserted a probe into her head until she was born. They were going to do the same thing. Another nurse came in to ask my nurse if she needed help inserting the probe. She lifted my sheet to get things ready and said, "WOW! There is a head!!" They pressed the emergency button and about 6 nurses flooded into the room. My doctor was not even there and the nurse delivered my baby. The crazy thing is I didn't push at all! He just slid right out! I didn't even realize what was happening and mentally missed the whole thing!
My doctor arrived and fixed me up and I got to hold my sweet baby boy! Born January 15, 2015 at 7:28pm. 7lbs 12oz, 21.25 inches.
